Ultimate guide to LUTs in 2023

Colorists can choose the LUTs based on the genre or visual feel they are trying to emulate, which makes the process much faster and efficient. Choosing the right LUT for the right visual feels has never been easier.

Colors are important and LUTs are a powerful tool.

Unless you have to spend a significant chunk of your life as a colorist, chances are that you don’t have the technical know-how of how to actually achieve the desired look.

This is where LUTs come in, they can easily transform the look of any footage, helping fast track the process.

A LUT is a Lookup Table.

In simpler words, any Lookup Table provides a predetermined shortcut for specific computation, converting one set of values to another.

In the context of color grading, it is a coded equation that transforms the color values of camera footage to the desired final footage.

Applying a LUT changes the value of colors in a pixel into something more desirable.

LUTs give you a predetermined visual feeling.

This predetermined certainty increases your color grading pace.

A warm red color evokes a different feeling than cold deep blue. Even within the same color, a cold deep blue evokes a different feeling than bright vibrant blue.

With LUTs, imagine the possibilities, when trying out all these different hues.

It helps to make your shots more cinematic. Let your colors consume your viewers in a mood created by your color scheme.

But be advised, incorrect grading can disconnect your viewers from the intended mood of your video project.

This is why we will be launching color grading tutorials in the coming weeks, tutoring on how to use our Retina LUTs inside Adobe Premiere Pro.
